Civil war is ravaging the countryside and a young boy and his beautiful sister have disappeared in the snow. Brother Cadafel is one of those out looking for them as well as treating a fellow monk from another Benedictine house nearby. Hugh Berengar, the deputy sheriff, is part of the search party but it is Cadfael who discovers the first traces of the missing children.

The battle for the crown between Stephen and Matilda, is still going on and the people of Worcester are evacuating. Among these refugees, are an orphaned brother and sister accompanied by a young nun, making their way to Shrewsbury. However, they do not reach Shrewsbury, but a monk is reported to have suffered severe wounding along the same trail the three travelers are using. The monk taken in by the local monastery, needs Cadfael to administer to his wounds, and so Cadfael makes his way there,
