A marriage is about to take place in Shrewsbury between a powerful lord and a young heiress in the care of her aunt and uncle. Brother Cadfael watches the procession as the both bride and groom ride into the town with the bride and her entourage staying at the abbey. He thinks the bride is not too keen on the marriage and wonders whether there is more behind it than meets the eye. Brother Cadfael comes to the rescue when a young, reluctant heiress is brought to the abbey for a marriage to a much older man, Huon de Domville. The prospective bride loves a young squire of her own age but her guardians are forcing the wedding to join two considerable estates. Although these books follow a very similar format, that is Cadfael helps two lovers, the books hold my interest throughout. This is a story of a young woman forced to marry an old man of great wealth, in order to make her foster parents a lot of money and standing. Obviously the woman does not want this, as she is actually in love with someone else.
