The crime was instantaneous and unpremeditated, and the murderer was left staring from the weapon on the table to the dead man in the shadow of the tapestry curtains, not apprehensive, not yet afraid, but incredulous and dumb.

This is not a spoiler. This is the start of the book.

Unlike other murder mysteries, the book starts with the murder and even shows us who the murderer is. The suspense element in this story is based on whether the murderer gets caught in the story.

This is definitely a crime story, but not really a mystery, as the reader is told all about the the murder and murderer a short way into the book. As the blurb says, a family has gathered together to celebrate Christmas, but each member of this family has taken the opportunity to try to get money from the family's head, their father. Set in 1931, with an unusual plot structure which was interesting but the overall execution of the idea was poor. The victim is announced right off the bat, and then not even a third of the way into the book we're told who did it.

The suspense comes from trying to work out if the criminal will get away with it or not.

Beautifully written but so full of despicable characters that it is difficult to care what happens to any of them.
