A good story but more a thriller than detective story. Jack Havoc is a psychopath with a fixation on the code he lives by or the science of luck. Very atmospheric with the fog of London. The story starts with Megs husband apparently back from the dead. Jack Havoc escapes from prison. A gang of misfits accidentally kidnaps Megs fiancée. Allingham is the only one of the famous "Golden Age" mystery writers that I hadn't tried yet. I think I saw this one mentioned somewhere and thought I'd start here.

I found this a gripping story, more a thriller than a mystery. There are memorable characters both extremely good and extremely bad, along with the more realistic shades of decency and villainy. Campion was more a background figure here, but his age and humanity are well portrayed. There is also a promising young police detective that has appeared in an earlier book and I hope to see again.

An enjoyable read from a new author from the Golden Age - have read Christie, Sayers and Marsh but my first from Allingham. Although number 14 in the Campion stories was able to follow and read as a standalone. Atmospheric setting in post war London.
