This is the first E.C. Lorac book I've read and I certainly enjoyed it enough to try another one. I liked the London setting and the descriptions. My only disappointment was that I like to check the street names on a map and I was able to do that in general terms but when it came to specific locations, like the houses where the characters lived, the street names were fictitious so it made them hard to pin down. First book I've read by Lorac, though I have quite a few. It is a classic puzzler with impossible crimes, missing bodies, and lost heirs. I found the author very clever in having her detective explain why something or someone wasn't possible just as it occurred to me it might be, as though the author knew the reader's mind. It lagged somewhat for me in the middle, but by the last chapters I was so puzzled, I couldn't determine who the murderer was—despite being fair-play, all clues being there—a ...more

While I loved reading this book I took away a star because I didn't like the plot resolution. However the setting, characters, humor and story are all great and I look forward to more Lorac and Macdonald. ...more
