I had forgotten many of the details of this first book in the Amelia Peabody series and this audiobook edition was a nice way to refresh my memory. Susan O'Malley did a decent narration though the characters didn't sound very English to my American ear (a quite minor point).
One of the aspects I had forgotten was how much of a satire of Gothic novels this was. Evelyn must have swooned about 8 times, putting her fairly high on the Gothic novel scale shown below:

2019 And again!
2016 Starting the series again, in order! Review was from 2013. Same ranking.
The first (1975, but only published in England in 1999)of this wonderful series of Egypt archaeology crime adventures with the narrator, Amelia Peabody and her fierce husband, Radcliffe Emerson. Well-written, knowledgeable and fun - so much fun. Here a Mummy comes to life - or does it?

This is my first Elizabeth Peter’s book. It was a selection for the Cozy Mystery Corner group at Goodreads last month but I just got to it now. My library has a rather large selection of the books in this series. I am glad that I got to this book. Amelia Peabody is a fantastic character, as are Evelyn and Mr. Emerson. They are well developed three dimensional characters, The plot was well developed with a lot of depth through the details and description. Ms. Peters skillful writing immersed me a
