5+++ stars. My favourite of all my favourite Campions and I'm so glad to be reading these in order. This was an extraordinary book, set in "pre-post-war" London, it is a complex, confusing but absolutely fascinating story. Starts off almost farcical but soon becomes deadly serious. The characters are all stunning (including London) and I felt so much for a war-weary Albert who just wanted to catch his train home. (What an ending!)

I have to say that I found this mystery somewhat confusing. It did seem to jump around a bit with a lot of disjointed parts, a dead body, an expensive rare wine, a love story and a wedding, but not one expected. It also high-lighted the difference between the treatment of the well-off upper class, and those not so fortunate, in this time. The ending does bring all these elements together and made it an enjoyable, worth while read.

A wonderful portrayal of a country and people worn out by war. The plot is quite convoluted at the beginning so both Campion and I were confused for the first half of the book but all the threads come together neatly by the end.

“Not my favorite” stated in the introduction penned by Agatha Christie and I quite agree.
That said, Allingham fails to disappoint and her protagonist, Campion, is at his broodiest mid- war best. .

I found this on Kindle under the title of "Coroner's Pidgin." I thought the mystery was quite good, and the descriptions of London during the blackouts were fascinating. ...more
