I enjoyed this outing with Commander Dalgliesh. Recovering from an illness he goes to visit an elderly friend in Dorset at Toynton Grange a private institution that looks after disabled people. On arrival he finds his friend Father Baddeley has died. The Commander stays on in his cottage to sort out some books that were left to him in the will.

A re-read after decades reminded me of how unlikeable PD James and her characters were in this, fifth, Adam Dalgleish whodunnit. Some splendid writing and character insight, but ponderous, dull, with a poor denouement.

Of course, Dagliesh steps into the middle of the investigation, even if it is somewhat reluctantly. There are references to Lourdes and miracle cures, the treatment of the dying and disabled, and even smuggling. The more books I read in this series, the more that I enjoy and appreciate them. Dagliesh

This is the fifth book in the series, but I did not find it as good as the preceding books. It does give more of an insight of Dalgliesh, but I found it just made me like him less than I already did. After recovering from an illness that had put him in hospital, he is doubting his returning back to his career in the police. Having received a letter from an old friend a(a Father Baddley, his father's old curate) asking him for some help, he decides to pay the Father a visit as part of his convale
