This is the third novella featuring John Bachelor – not sure why it is listed on Amazon as, ‘Slough House Novella 2,” as it follows on from, ‘The Drop,’ and ‘The List.’ Also, although this takes place in the same world as Slough House, and characters from the series are mentioned, or can appear briefly, it is really a parallel world. I realise this was only a novella, however I suppose I was hoping that it would be slightly longer than it is. Taking place within the Slough House series, we are conversant with some of the characters. John Bachelor is what is known as a "Milkman" That is someone who checks up on the retired spooks, who receive a payment for services rendered whilst employed by the secret services. So now I have read all the Slough House novels and novellas. A very sad day. While waiting for the next Slough House book, I’ll listen to the Barbican House podcast and read some of Mick Herron’s other books. I need to know what happened to river!

Very slight novella, dryly amusing and quite topical. Its fun to revisit Lady Di's machinations and Bachelor's woes but this is not the best Slough House. ...more
