What Members Thought

Great introduction to Inspector Dalgleish, although he was more in the background. Enjoyed the setting, characters, and intricate locked door mystery! Looking forward to the second book!

The first story to feature Adam Dalgliesh as the DCI investigating a murder in which all the family members are suspects. The revelation at the end is not an "ah-ha" moment, and the writing is pretty much uneven. A perfectly passable story but if you are here for Dalgliesh I would recommend reading the later ones.

My first Adam Dalgleish novel. It was fairly interesting, some good characters, and I didn’t guess the murderer until very near the end. However, I found the behaviour of the murder victim unconvincing - she seemed to be doing things for no better reason really than to get herself murdered. And Adam Dalgleish himself I didn’t find particularly interesting, though perhaps he improves as the series goes on. I like his sergeant though.

I thought this was a good book and would give it a 3.5. Not quite a 4. I'll be reading others in this series. I like the detective.
