Ngaio Marsh returns to the theatre for this, her twenty fourth mystery, featuring Alleyn. Peregrine Jay visits The Dolphin Theatre – blitzed and bombed out – which he longs to restore. However, he has an accident, which sees him falling through the stage and nearly drowning. Rescued by a wealthy, secretive, businessman, he finds that the gentleman in question is suddenly willing to buy the theatre, restore it and set Peregrine up as the manager. Along with his friend, Jeremy Jones, the two young

Another Marsh mystery set in a theater. Lots of interesting background and surprising twists.

Unfortunately, for me, this isn't one of Marsh's better Alleyn mysteries. As other reviewers have said, the last half of the story fell flat.
It was the Chief Commander who was his immediate senior at the Yard. Alleyn listened with disgust to his story. "- and so Fred Gibson thought that as you know Conducis and had a hand in the installation, he'd better call us. He just missed you at the Yard. Peregrine Gay falls down a well at the disused theatre known as The Dolphin. This unpleasant event leads the owner to change his mind about demolishing the building and instead it is restored to its former glory and its first play is one especially written by Peregrine himself. Unfortunately the caretaker is murdered and a glove thought to have belonged to Shakespeare’s son which was on display at the theatre is apparently stolen.

A fairly late entry of the terrific Inspector Allen whodunit series. Ngaio Marsh, doyenne of the New Zealand theatrical stage, uses her knowledge to provide a wonderful picture of the characters in and around a London theatre and play. Plus the murder, and a theft, to be solved. Splendid stuff.
The GR blurb:
'At the newly restored Dolphin Theatre, murder takes center stage
The once-dilapidated Dolphin Theater, now restored to its former glory, is open again-and all of London is buzzing about its n ...more

An interesting addition to the series, with Marsh's common theatre setting, but a few twists in characters and victims.

I thought this started really well, and it hooked me in straight away. Then unfortunately, I did find it dragged. I'm not sure if it is just that I have had too much of mysteries set in theatres, or if the book is like that, but I found I got bored with all the false, affected characters. Towards the end, the story did pick up and was quite well written, but I'm afraid that by that time I was struggling with it.
