Another excellent Campion mystery and it was good to meet up with "Uncle William" (a character from Police at the Funeral ) again. I loved the mix of a nasty tricks campaign, the setting of a country estate plus the backstage musical. The descriptions of musicals on stage plus the dance sequences are superb.

We have a very melancholy Campion in this story and at times it was a little frustrating as he just wasn't or refused to be "on it". Dark elements in this mystery too. Oh, but the ending was

I didn't like this as much as the previous books in the Campion series. Campion infatuated by someone's wife, just didn't ring true to me. Due to his frame of mind, he was being rather dense about the whole situation. I want to wake him up and tell him who the person he was after was. Every author is allowed at least one book that is a disappointment, and I hope this is the only one from Allingham. ...more

3.5 stars. Certainly not my favourite, but certainly a worthwhile read if you like the series. Quite a different set of reactions seen here by the usually more self-assured, slightly smarmy main protagonist Albert Campion
