So , as I said below when I read the book on holiday in 2019, I really enjoyed this. A well crafted mystery with some fabulous characters.
I bought my first “DCI Barnaby” audiobook a few years ago, but it was only a couple of weeks ago that we listened to the first one, as a bit of a change from Ms Christie or Simenon, and I have to say we were more than pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed going back to the first Midsomer Murders mystery and listening to it as an audiobook as I'd read the paperback previously - long enough ago to have forgotten most of the plot.
As always with Caroline Graham's books, it's the characters who drive the story which is much richer and has so much more depth than the TV series. I enjoy the TV series but it feels quite light in comparison to the books. ...more

It was fascinating to read this book, because I have been a fan of the "Inspector Barnaby" mysteries on PBS for many years, but had never before read one of the original novels on which the TV show was based.
To my surprise, I had essentially zero memory of the plot, despite having watched the entire 20+ seasons of Midsomer Murders not just once, but twice. What I realized before long was that the book's plot must be much more complex than the television version, not only because of the length o ...more
