This book was published in 1939 and it shows. The plot involves the murder of an unpopular but rich middle-aged spinster and a cast of very unlikeable suspects indeed. Ngaio Marsh, despite being a spinster herself, is very keen to push all the stereotypes of the time surrounding unmarried women of a certain age.
