Group Buddy Read 2023/24
4.5 stars
I really enjoyed this as a Lord Peter novel, probably the best JPW novel so far. I loved the interplay between Harriet and Peter, as well as Bunter's input. In addition we had the wonderful Dowager Duchess letters, which are always a source of information as well as witty and amusing. It as also interesting to come across the Wimsey children as well as PB (Bunter and Hope's Peter) and hear what they are up to.

I started reading this book thinking it would be a wonderful introduction to how Lord Peter Wimsey started his career as a sleuth. Bearing in mind that Jill Paton Walsh is definitely not Dorothy L. Sayers, I was prepared to give some leeway. I was, despite of this, sorely disappointed with this book. The narrative is jerky, racing ahead at the speed of light on occasions and going at a snail's pace at times to the point where it's quite boring. The concept of the story, which covers LPW detailin

Okay.....it's now post-war (1951) and Peter and Bunter are telling Harriet all about Peter's first case in 1921 - The Attenbury Emeralds. This case is mentioned quite a bit in the DLS novels so I was curious to know more. I started off enjoying it but then felt it was going on too long. There were so many people involved - in fact I should have been warned because there was a dauntingly long cast list at the beginning of the book!
