A snow storm on Christmas Eve strands a train. There is a dead body on the train. A group of people trudge off the train looking for a house, a town, assistance, etc. They eventually find a house and feel a little bad about entering - company must be coming because a meal and plates are laid out, a fire is lit - but nobody is there. So they make themselves at home. They have a couple of invalids - sprained/twisted ankle, frostbite, etc. And some creepy portraits.

I love a good country house mystery, even more so when the residents are celebrating Christmas, or trying to. With a couple of dead bodies, an altered will, and a hidden treasure, this was an enjoyable read. There were a couple of parts that were pretty unlikely, but it didn’t bother me. I willing to suspend my disbelief for a good story.

Despite some nebulous intentions, this was the only seasonal book I managed this year. But, it was a good one, full of things I love. i.e. trains, ghosts, murder, an abandoned house in a snowstorm.
