What Members Thought

I actually read this a little while ago, delighted to find an unknown-to-me Golden Age mystery writer. Now, having read and moderately enjoyed it a second time thanks to Netgalley, I don't know whether it's my fault or the book's that I honestly can't remember whodunnit…. It could just be my brain. I do have the memory of a goldfish.

"The house seemed to be full of lunatics who never gave away anything they knew until it was just too late." A good setup for a classic mystery, but the investigator muddling through & suspects changing their story every other page became tedious.

The Santa Klaus Murder is a vintage mystery, set in a country home where the family, and a couple of others, are together to celebrate Christmas. Add in a murder and it should be a perfect read for me. Unfortunately, I found it rather lackluster.
It starts off slow, with members of the household telling their version of the events leading up to the murder. Sir Osmond was not a nice father, overbearing and holding the children's inheritance over their heads so that they would marry someone he deem ...more

I really enjoyed this traditional-feeling Golden Age mystery novel. It may be a bit too slow to those who don't enjoy books from that era, but I never thought it dragged and fortunately it wasn't full of nothing but unlikable people. There was a decent amount of Christmas, though the celebration is cut short by murder, and I enjoyed the bit of romance, too. It actually reminded me of Georgette Heyer's mysteries, which I'm reading at the same time. I'd recommend this to any lover of mysteries fro

Really a 3.5. I just wanted more characterization. Love a good puzzle but I love Agatha Christie because I love Poirot and Marple. Dorothy L. Sayers is my favorite of all mystery writers because I want to make Peter Wimsey forget all the bad things that haunt him. I keep looking for that in other stories of the same period. Sometimes it's there. I didn't find it here. This is ridiculous, but such a great cover makes it even more disappointing! ;-)

Probably actually 3 1/2 stars.
I found the first few chapters dreadfully boring. Of course, I later found out there was a reason for that. This book definitely picked up after the murder.
Can't say that I really guessed who the murderer was although I was very suspicious of the guilty party.
This was republished by The British Library Crime Classics, originally published in 1936.

A good, solid seasonal mystery.
