I love Book 4, Warleggan, of the Poldark series almost the best of all the books I've read so far.... Caroline and Dr. Enys have just 'talked' to see if they are suited for each other. She is a strong personality and rich (18th century rich); he is a smart doctor but poor and soft spoken. The concern heretofore has been that Caroline's strong personality would devour the poor doctor alive.... But is she that spoiled and shallow? I don't think so. She's that smart and compassionate.... This was as well written as the others, with fine character detail reminiscent of Jane Austen, but it wasn't as enjoyable to read. I knew what was coming and wasn't looking forward to it, and Graham's description of Demelza's emotions were so spot-on and evocative that I felt as if it were happening to me.
Though I'm not a fan of Elizabeth, unlike many readers I felt sympathy for her in this book. Many readers seem to think she's some sort of Machiavellian mastermind who manipulates Ross but I d This was as well written as the others, with fine character detail reminiscent of Jane Austen, but it wasn't as enjoyable to read. Though I'm not a fan of Elizabeth, unlike many readers I felt sympathy for her in this book. Many readers seem to think she's some sort of Machiavellian mastermind who manipulates Ross but I don't think she has that much foresight and slyness. Graham portrays her as a woman who wants to be adored and taken care of, someone who can't see through others with these traits such as George and who often acts thoughtlessly without insight into what her actions will evoke in others.
I guess I just find it difficult to understand what Ross' fascination with her is. There's a moment before she tells him she realised she made a mistake in marrying Francis when Graham says she and Ross were discussing their old common interests. What common interests? As far as I could tell she was simply beautiful and refined but there was nothing more to her. But I suppose Graham's explanation of Ross' obsession (that she was an unattainable prize) is reasonable enough.

Apart from insight into Ross, Demelza, Dwight and Caroline (view spoiler) Graham excells at painting a portrait of George, who's the type of person most of us will have encountered. You may intensely dislike him, but you understand his pettiness and controlling nature. I almost felt sorry for Elizabeth when Graham described her second marriage.

"The longer I live," Ross said, pulling his brows together painfully, "the more I distrust these distinctions between strong men and weak. Events do what they like with us, and such--such temporary freedom as we have only fosters an illusion." (p. 113)

Everyone is weak in some ways; everyone has flaws. As Demelza says, it's the balance that counts. I appreciated being along for the emotional journey in the characters heads, especially Ross's as he acted on rash impulse and emotion that upset his ...more
