It seems that like most reviewers who recently read this book I'd also watched the new BBC series and wanted to find out more. I was a bit skeptical about a historical novel written in the '40s and how stuffy it might be but Graham's style is beautifully evocative and holds your attention throughout, even when discussing 18th-century copper mining. All the characters are well drawn and you instantly fall in love with Ross, and especially the lovely Demelza and desperately want them to be togethe ...more

I have fallen so in love with this new adaptation on pbs and so decided to give the series a try and was not disappointed! This first book focused on the first 4 episodes of the new series and the only reason for 4 stars is the simple fact that the show just gripped me more. Maybe it's because of Aidan Turner (and his chemistry with Eleanor) though! I would have liked to see more build up between Ross and Demelza's relationship but the show does a great job of showing it in what little time they ...more

I love this story so much!!! With minor differences (pacing would be a huge one!) the recent BBC show stayed pretty close to the original...so if you loved it, you'll love this too!

The main thing I got from the books is the insight you get from the characters perspectives. On the show, you only get what the actors are able to convey through the script, expressions, etc. Graham gives you a lot more of what's going on inside his characters in the novels.

This was my second time around on this...I

I much preferred the second book as I think it did a better job of delving into the complexities of the Poldark family, but I much enjoyed the developing relationship between Demelza and Verity. It did a fine job at painting the characters or Ross, Prudie, Jud, and Verity though, as well as a fine contrast of young Demelza to Mistress Poldark. Still, it is my 3rd favorite of the Cornwall book series I have read so far.
