Kate Grenville set out to write a book about her great-great-great grandfather Solomon Wiseman, but along the way it morphed into a fictional account of him as a character named William Thornhill and his wife Sarah or as she is more commonly known in the novel Sal. The Secret River is an award winning book and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2006.

Well-written and interesting. It was fascinating to experience the life of early European settlers in Australia and their interactions with the aborigines, it also quite depressing.
