I just love Atkinson's clever observations about people, the trueness of her characters even when they do things that we don't expect. In this book, we follow Jackson Brodie, who is investigating a case while trying to figure out what to do with his life, and Tracy, also former police, who finds something worth living for, even if it brings danger and uncertainty.

Jackson Brodie is hired by Hope MacAlister to find her birth parents. This proves to be a problem since he can find no birth certificate or adoption record for her. Tracy Waterhouse, a retired cop and now head of security at a mall makes a snap decision that changes her life. Tilly is an actress descending into dementia. Eventually these storylines connect. The book travels around a lot between characters and back and forth in time. I found it interesting how everything came together in the end.
