It was a book that had a good idea for a story line but I just couldn't get into it. I believe one reason for this was because the characters...the investigating detective especially...already had the suspect tried, sealed and jailed, refusing to listen to or consider that the murders could have happened any other way. His narrow minded view became frustrating and boring after a while. Of course he only had 6 months to live so he was planning to go out in a blaze of glory. The entire plot came off too convoluted and implausible. Charlie...the suspect.... made so many stupid decisions that I didn't care about what happens to him. To make matters all the worse he doesn't learn from any of his mistakes. That he's a high school English teacher seems very unrealistic to me.
I have read many of Paul,Cleave's other books and found them entertaining and enjoyable with well drawn characters that you could really like even when they weren't at their best. In all fairness I see that this is reprint and was actually one of Paul Cleave's early books so perhaps inexperience played a big role in the writing.
