I have got to visit Sweden. It's home of some of my favorite literary characters, first Lisbeth Salander and now Ove.

I was told I'd probably love this book, and I did.
This is one of those books that sneaks up on you. Even the writing at the beginning is quite curt, straightforward, and even repetitive, like Ove's thinking, so it isn't until you've read a few chapters that you realize you're hooked. You've probably heard this is about a curmudgeon. That and the beginning doesn't suggest it could become a page-turner, yet I actually stayed up late at night reading: What would happen next?

I totally love this book and wish Ove was my neighbor. Ove is a man living on his own after his wife's death. He comes off rather curmudgeonly at the beginning of the book but the gruff exterior is hiding a man who was absolutely devoted to his wife and to working hard and doing the right thing. This book had me alternately crying my eyes out and laughing heartily. Along with Ove I love his neighbors Parvaneh, her kids, Jimmy, Anita and Rune and the mangy cat who I would totally adopt. I loved this book. Ove says what so many of us think but he has a heart of gold beneath his gruff exterior.
This is an excellent character study. When the neighbors start coming around Ove, he is not pleased but they grow on him. Actually, he cannot get rid of them no matter what he does. He wants to join his wife but there is always someone he needs to straighten out and teach so he cannot join her just yet. He's a plain spoken man but so lovable. What a fantastic book! Ove is a man who is hard to like, yet I love him. In fact, this author has written a book entirely of characters that I think are superb. I won't get into the story, I feel it will give too much away to try and explain it in a way that would make another person want to read it.
