Whoa. I thought what happened to the sex trafficked women of Chris Bohjalian's Guest Room was pretty rough. What happened to the women in this book was much, much worse. In fact I can't think of a book I've ever read with a more misogynist character. It's almost hard to believe that this book was written by a woman. That said, if dark is your thing then this thriller might be in your lane.

This was a ride of a book, let me tell you. Every time you think "oh no, that's awful, can't get much worse than that", it said "wait, watch this". I was questioning every character's motives, intentions and their status as good or bad with each interaction with them. Every. Single. Character. Although this is a crime-ridden psychological thriller, it is primarily the story of a family dealing with (or avoiding dealing with) a missing daughter/sister, a victim of rape and murder. That is already a sustained psychological crisis. Through the book, they try to survive their horrendous discoveries and those fighting to keep them secret.
