I am a huge fan of the Shadowhunters and loved Cassandra Clare's writing in the Infernal Devices. I read both Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince and they are seriously among my favorite YA books. However, City of Bones is a failure on so many levels.

Most of the plot is inconsistent with its pace, it gets too haphazard and corny at times. When there was a part that I enjoyed, most of the other times it was painful to get through. I won't say it was terrible- but it might be the worst of Cassan I am a huge fan of the Shadowhunters and loved Cassandra Clare's writing in the Infernal Devices. I won't say it was terrible- but it might be the worst of Cassandra that I have read so far. However, as it was her debut novel I will cut her some slack. Seemingly, she was not that good when she started out but right now, I can say for sure that she is a fantastic writer.

Even though she has heavily borrowed from Harry Potter, the Shadow World has its perks. The concept of the Shadowhunters is very enjoyable and I will continue the series anyway, since I bought all the books together.

If I have to critique her characters, I would say Isabelle Lightwood stood out among all of them. She sounds similar to Jessamine from ID, and I used to enjoy her too. There's always something about a pretty girl who is an equally good fighter and tough through the times. The main protagonist Clary Fray is alright. She sounds too childish at times, but I have to be patient and expect that she develops over the course of next 4 books. Jace Wayland is a typical bad boy that I did love throughout the book, but NOT in the end. The ending was terrible. The twist with Valentine was predictably bad and that is what ruined the book for me. IF I leave out the ending, the book overall isn't that bad. Seems like both the author and Jace lost their brains by the end of the book and were in a hurry to finish it off. That was too corny.

This is definitely not a positive review. And I am criticizing it because I know that Clare is capable of much more. However, I do have a feeling the rest of the books aren't going to be that great- it might turn out to be an okay series overall. I would probably recommend Infernal Devices over Mortal Instruments to anyone. But, as I am just one book into this series, it won't be fair to say that. If I were to compare just the first books of both series, CA stands out by far. ...more

Cassandra Clare made this book IMPOSSIBLE to put down. Very Well Written. i reccomend this book to any teens that like a book packed with action and adventure with a hint of romance.

Wow!! City of bones was a refreshingly different book that takes you into a world full of shadow hunters, demons, werewolves, vampires and other supernatural creatures. The story was fast paced and I found it hard to put the book down. And the characters were fun loving and at times, so hilarious. Specially Jace.
