2nd read: 06/04/2015 **This book was just as amazing as the first time I read it! I really missed this book! The duel in the end still got me nervous, even though I knew the outcome. I took notes this time and I've got evidence now to back my theories and I'm standing firmer in the fact that my ship will sail haha. Seriously, SJ Maas, you are the queen.**

Wow. Beautiful. Empowering. Well-written. There are too many words to describe Throne of Glass. It was just absolutely amazing. I walked into this series not knowing what to expect from it. I didn’t even know that it was fantasy. I read through it fairly quickly and I fell in love with the characters, especially the main characters: assassin Celaena Sardothien and Crown Prince Dorian Havilliard. Chaol Westfall, the Captain of the Guard, caught my attention as well but was a bit too rigid for me. Dorian, however, was a little treat wrapped in a bow! He was very easy to like (at least I thought so) and his relationship with Celaena was fun to read.

However, the real star of this novel was Celaena! She is the most notorious assassin in Adarlan. No one knew how she looked like or even how old she was but everyone feared her name. Dorian offers her freedom from Endovier, which is pretty much slavery at the works. Accepting this offer and winning the competition means her freedom but she’s getting more than she’s bargained for. Celaena is feisty, witty, sassy, intelligent, and caring. She’s strong, loyal, and a total bada**. This is the first novel I’ve read starring a female assassin and it felt empowering! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t intend to be an assassin but I loved her confidence and the power that she exerted. It was obvious that she went through the roughest time of her life but she’s still fighting on!

I loved the way Sarah J. Maas wrote the novel. I loved the plot twists and the romance. Her writing pulled me right into the world and her descriptions of Endovier, Adarlan, and the characters made the experience that much better. Of course, the romance in the book gave it even more brownie points! She is definitely a new favorite author and Throne of Glass was an amazing debut novel. ...more

I first intended to fit the Throne of Glass in the Trilogy topic of the challenge, but then I want to leave that for the Shatter Me trilogy, and Throne of Glass is a series and not a trilogy. Rereading this book has re-ignited my love for this series. I have to be honest, after Queen of Shadows, I kind of just wanted to stop reading the series. I was disappointed with the direction that it was going and it felt like a disservice to the first 3 books. But here I am rereading the series in the that I'll like QoS and EoS better than when I first read it (not hard to beat since I mostly disliked them).

This may be more of a rant than a review. Not necessarily a bad one, but definitely an impassioned one. Because Throne of Glass and I have perhaps the most love-hate relationship I've had with a book all year.

So there were some high expectations I had for this going in, based on the plethora of rave reviews I've read:

So I've been meaning to read this book for a while now. It was forever just sitting on my TBR pile collecting dust. I don't know what it was that kept me from it, but I just kept delaying it. Boy was that the wrong move. I have seriously been missing out on an epic assassin fantasy!
This novel has everything you need in a YA fantasy series. Action, romance, history, and magical elements. Although it had some shortcomings for me, over all as the novel progressed I just didn't want to put it down. So I've been meaning to read this book for a while now. It was forever just sitting on my TBR pile collecting dust. I don't know what it was that kept me from it, but I just kept delaying it. Boy was that the wrong move. I have seriously been missing out on an epic assassin fantasy!
This novel has everything you need in a YA fantasy series. Action, romance, history, and magical elements. Although it had some shortcomings for me, over all as the novel progressed I just didn't want to put it down. But I will get into that in a minute.
First I want to talk about the over all premise of the story. A bunch of bad ass characters competing to the death at times to become the champion. Not the most original plot line around, but there was so much that saved this book for me.

For one thing, it was about an assassin. Who doesn't like a good story involving assassins. They're pretty bad ass and interesting. And this story's assassin elements keep your eyes peeled. There's also the detailed landscape descriptions. I'm a visual reader, so vivid descriptions of the environment and characters is a must to keep me interested.

Another plus for me was the magic lore in the story. It was what made it different and exciting. You don't get too far into it until closer to the end of the story, but it was well worth the wait. Ancient magic symbols, ghost queens, and alternate universes where the evil creatures lurk. I want more!!! Absolutely can't wait to see where the story goes in terms of the magical elements.

Although I had a love and hate relationship with some of the characters, I must admit this novel and a wide variety of great characters. Whether it be the bad ass lady assassin heroine, the courageous but cautious guard captain, the dreamy prince, or the mysterious foreign rebel princess. You get a bit of everything in the novel.
My favorite character being Nehemia, the foreign rebel princess fighting to free her country from the hands of a ruthless king. I have so much hope for character development with her and I want to see how far her storyline will go.

But no story is without its faults or short comings in my own opinion. So I want to talk about those as well. I guess we can start with the main character Celaena. When I think of an assassin I think of hard core soulless killers. But that's not what we get in this story. We get a very girly assassin. She may have been trained to kill but she also succumbs to her emotions way too easily. Especially falling in love too quickly. Something I wish was not. In my opinion I hoped she'd be a bit more hard core.

Then there was the love triangle. Assassin, crown prince, and captain of the guard. It seemed a bit weird. I can't really put my finger on it, but I just didn't get why it all happened so quickly. I guess there was just so much story to tell and not enough time to drag out the relationships to have time to blossom. I didn't have any feelings or any team ships. I honestly couldn't care who she ends up with. But I would like the prince for myself. But that's just because he was my book boyfriend this time around.

As we come to a conclusion I want to say that there were more redeeming qualities to this story then there were faults. I am super excited to continue on in the series and have high hopes for some more cool magical elements, and bad ass assassining. Even though I just made that word up, I feel it makes sense.
