This is the third book in the series A Song of Ice and Fire that I lovingly call the Game of Thrones series. That is the name of the first book and it is the primary theme of the book. I will say upfront, this one was the best. Because I was prepared through spoilers to see many of the characters I both love and hated "put to the sword', "put to the flame", and "put to the noose". This was an excellent installment in the Song of Ice and Fire series. The characters are all so interesting. Everything is so well-described that you can just about see it, hear it, taste it. The plot is beautifully complex, unfolding in ways expected and unexpected, but always following its own logic. And I don't think I've mentioned the humor before, but there's a good dose of humor in these books. Even when situations are grim and deadly serious, a bit of dark humor seeps through. That can help keep things rolling through the sad parts. It's easy to get wrapped up in this story and feel like 1127 pages is not in fact a long book, but instead hardly long enough! I can't wait to read the next two doorstoppers!

It's hard to say whether I liked this book or A Clash of Kings better. Both were very good. Here follow some general comments about the fate of characters in this story. It's very general, but I hid it just in case anyone is really avoiding all possible spoilers.

A Storm of Swords is easily my favorite book in the series so far. While A Game of Thrones did a fantastic job of introducing the characters and setting up the story lines, I thought A Clash of Kings lacked much of the excitement that I felt in the first book. I remember thinking that not much happened when I finished ACoK, and that Martin may have wasted a book in his series. I wasn't let down in the slightest with ASoS.
