I have read the reviews for this book. For the most part it has received good reviews. There are a few who have given it one or two stars and I am really wondering why. I have read books 1-3 and in the middle of the 4th. The biggest complaint seems to be that the book is too long and some people can't get past page 100. You visit your local bookstore for a new story to read. You walk over to the science fiction/fantasy section and start browsing hoping to find that new fantasy story to delve into. You want a new adventure with honorable and chivalrous characters that are set out on a journey that will change their lives forever. Trying to defeat the stories obvious sinister villain, who wants nothing but the destruction of everything that is pleasant. Then set the world's wrongs right, return home at the end of You visit your local bookstore for a new story to read. Then set the world's wrongs right, return home at the end of their journey to smoke their pipes in front of the fire and tell the adventure to their grandchildren. If this is the kind of story you are looking for than walk straight past George RR Martin's, A Game of Thrones. The epic fantasy saga that is, A Song of Ice and Fire, is a breath of fresh air for the fantasy genre. The first book of Martin's series, A Game of Thrones, delivers a compelling story full of intriguing characters, bravery, love, lust, betrayal, greed, horror, deception, duty, politics, and mystery. All thrown into a pool of realism that makes this series so believable and impossible to resist. Set in a world where the seasons are thrown off and winters can last for years at a time and magic is all but a memory an epic adventure awaits. The story begins as Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell and Reagent of the North, is told that one of his closest friends Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died. Upon this news the King, Robert Baratheon, has summoned his childhood friend Eddard Stark to serve the realm and to take the place of Jon Arryn as the Hand of the King. But before Eddard's departure to the Red Keep he soon learns that Jon's death was not entirely natural. He knows the dangers that lie ahead but holds to his duty to his King and to his old friend to find his killer. The story then follows Lord Stark and his family on a quest that is surrounded by traps and pitfalls and treacherous characters who would do anything for their own advancement. In 'Thrones' it is hard to distinguish between hero and villain and what is right and wrong. Where no character is too valuable and death can take anyone at anytime you soon realize the weight of the characters and the choices they make. With such a colorful cast and point of views that can span from one hour to months at a time Martin puts this book together seamlessly. The amount of realism oozes through the pages of this book which makes it all but impossible to put down and will leave you in anticipation for the next installment of the series. And things get worse before they get better because after all, Winter is Coming.

Very engrossing and I am already hooked onto this series...I have even watched a couple of episodes of the HBO series; the TV series is restrained by time and you do not see each charatcer develop. I would recommend the book anyday.
