Early on in Mystic River, one of the characters makes a reference to feeling "like he was in a goddamned Springsteen song". This sentiment perfectly captures my reading experience. The whole time I was reading Mystic River, Springsteen's Nebraska album was playing in the background of my mind. Nebraska is stripped down and doesn't have any big Born-in-the-USA-style anthems. A good urban crime mystery. Read this after enjoying the film adaptation. I like some of the details the novel had that the film couldn't fit in. But I also found this book to be a bit bloated with details and descriptions that tended to rave in the story. A lot of parts of this book seemed to rant about side ideas like gentrification and human behavior but in ways that didn't seem to service the story.
