Very good! I love Jane Eyre but dislike Wuthering Heights, so I didn't know what to expect with the least popular Brontë. In my opinion, the Tenant of Wildfell Hall is leaps and bounds better than Wuthering Heights and a close second to Jane Eyre. It's at once an intreguing story about love, society, and gender roles. My major grievance is that Gilbert, the narrator, is pretty much a jerk, but the author makes him out to be "good enough" for the reader to like (I believe the reader is intended t ...more

I LOVED this book. I thought I would like it. "It's a Bronte," I said. "They say it's feminist!" I said. But OH MAN.

So, not only is "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" about a single mother with a job navigating life and relationships in a new town, no. This book is about a woman who escapes an alcoholic and emotionally abusive husband and then refuses to suffer fools or the Victorian social mores that produced those fools.

This took longer to read than I would have liked, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. I see why Anne Bronte is the underdog Bronte; she was far more realistic in her discussion of the failings of humanity than her sisters. Such a shame she's so frequently forgotten. ...more
