It wasn't exactly the story I wanted, but I did enjoy it. Aunt Lydia was fascinating. ...more

So much better than expected. I remember how deeply skeptical I was when news first broke about the publication of this book; it felt like a little like Go Set a Watchman all over again as well as a chance to cash in on the current political climate and reinvigorated interest in its predecessor due to the TV adaptation. However, I devoured the audiobook, savoring the multiple perfectly chosen narrators that help bring these rich, intriguing characters to life. The existence of this book does hav ...more

Really well done. Thankfully I did not find this as depressing and overwhelming as The Handmaid’s Tale. The tone is a little lighter which I appreciated. It was excellent and I could read another novel detailing what happened next.

I've seen that a lot of people didn't really like this one, but I did. Admittedly, this is only the third Atwood novel I have ever read, so her writing is still fresh to me. I enjoyed it. But I find the plot very convenient. The conventions that make thrillers exciting is that things go wrong, plots twist and thicken. There were edges where the plot could have thickened but it never really set. Atwood is smart though and this book was still enjoyable. She definitely gave fans some satiation.

I was worried about this one because The Handmaid's Tale didn't really need a sequel, but Atwood delivered. It was also kind of funny, which surprised me.

It is not another Handmaid’s Tale; nothing could be. It seems to share more DNA with The Year of the Flood than it does with its predecessor. But it’s a solid sequel and provides a satisfying conclusion—kind of. (It seems hard to believe right now that a single set of documents could bring down Gilead.) Still—I enjoyed the ride and the return to this world.
