What Members Thought

It took me a while to get into this novel. Fun and interesting as the world is that Fforde creates in the first half of the narrative, I was curious to see in what way Jane Eyre would eventually factor into it. It's in its later half that "The Eyre Affair" really shines and I was thoroughly invested into the story at that point. This book is so fun to read. Really surreal and full of literary crime action. All of the literary references and jokes were really fun. If you're familiar with the story of Jane Eyre, it will be more satisfying than if you aren't.

This felt like something that should be super up my alley, but somehow wasn't, so I'd give it a 2.5-3 for being well done but surprisingly, tonally not for me. I think if it had all been the core literary mystery it might have worked better for me; both the romantic and Crimean war subplots were very hard for me to connect to.
