I find it a little odd how many comparisons there are in the reviews and cover blurbs for this book. This book pretty much defies comparison. I've read all of the books this was compared to and the people who made them were really reaching. I had a hard time categorizing it... marked it fantasy and humor, I don't have an action/adventure list for books but would add it to that if I did. Two stars because it's a clever idea. Some of the things in here are brilliant concepts. However, I highly disliked the writing. The names are ridiculous. Why are some puns and some not? Why puns where they are completely irrelevant to the character? The names drove me crazy. The dialogue felt unnatural and the characters were mostly flat, none of them really having a distinct voice. As I started reading it today I realized I've already read it. I knew I'd read "The Big Over Easy", the first in Fforde's 'Nursery Crimes' series. For some reason, I blended the two in my head. I honestly can't decide whether I liked this book. Is it original and imaginative, or gimmicky? Maybe both? It's fun, but weird. I think I like the idea of it a lot, but the execution seems off, in a way that is difficult to articulate. ...more

Odd in the beginning, but, once you get the hang of it, a very entertaining read! I will definitely look up the next book.
