Ok so I really, REALLY disliked this book, but I gave it a 2 star rating because there WAS some symbolism going on. It states "The Road is life.", "This road drives ME.", and calls it a "senseless nightmare road." The last of which may explain the chaotic, ridiculous plot. I know Dean represents a lot of things, and I'm sure there is much more symbolism on deeper and more subtle levels, but I honestly don't care enough to find them all.

I read this back in college and even then the type of freedom Kerouac is touting didn't appeal to me... completely. I get why some people hate it and I get why some people love it so I guess I'm somewhere in the middle which is a lonely place to be when it comes to this book. Let me clarify: the only reason I'm in the middle is that I understand the impact this book had on a certain generation, which can't be overlooked, and on culture- however I'm not saying it was a "good" impact. "On the Road" was the third Kerouac book I read. I think it is safe to say that I'm going through bit of a phase. My first was "Lonesome Traveler," which I knew from reviews I had read was written very differently than his other works. I ended up liking it a lot. I remember some of the stories were just whatever to me, but the ones I did like, I liked A LOT. And then I read "The Subterraneans," which I absolutely adored.
