I remember reading this book, or having it read to me, when I was probably about James's age, so I wanted to see if it would hold up. Surprisingly, it does. I enjoyed the story, particularly Dahl's tendency to have things get rather dark starting on the first page, when relearn that James's parents were eaten by a rhinoceros. And he suffers the kind of horrible abuse that J K Rowling later inflicted on Harry potter, with perhaps even more fabulous results in the end. though, when a creepy old ma ...more
