I really loved this book. It was a slow burn, but taking it slow was part of the enjoyment. The character building was perfect, there were perspectives of all the crew at just the right times. I loved each of those quirky characters by the end of the book. I cried at the end. I'm really glad people are writing more sf w interesting social premises. I really really appreciated a galactic federation in which humans are Kinda Wimpy. The world-building was good. I cared a lot about all of the characters. The pacing was super well done; it built slowly over the course of the first >3/4 without my even really noticing it, and it resolved all of it in a way that was satisfying. I enjoyed it a lot. I tried so hard but I just couldn't get into it. 200 pages in and so little had happened and even when stuff started to happen I wasn't super interested. I can kind of see why people like this. The gender and sexuality politics are interesting but not enough to get me through 400 plus pages.
