Holy cliffhanger, Batman! Good thing I have the last book!
The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, Book 2) by Philip Pullman (1998)
Pullman hits his stride in the second book of this trilogy, both in terms of pacing and word-crafting. I loved being completely gripped by the characters and their adventures. Watching the Will/ Lyra dynamic develop is another joy - I loved the sentence about seeing their expression reflected in the other's face.

Doesn't hold up as well to a re-read as I'd hoped; its didacticism becomes even more glaring.
