This is an alternative universe. We are in England in the early 1800's. And magic is real. There are theoretical magicians who just study and learn about it and there are practicing magicians. I adore this book. Absolutely loved the mix of alternate history and fantasy. It was so funny in a comedy of manners kind of way. Sure it was tough to lug around, but that just meant I was actually excited to come home for bedtime and read every day.
