I am so glad to have read this book. It is a perfect blend of mystery and thriller, yet humorous and very psychologically disturbing.
Merricat is a fascinating narrator. Jackson writes her in such a way that you can't help but want to protect her. She may be childlike in her mannerisms but she is strong and determined to protect her sister and their way of life. She is ritualistic and superstitious. Jackson's prose is beautiful. That was disappointing. I really don’t understand why this is considered a classic. It is also not horror, maybe suspense, but not horror by any stretch of the imagination. The book is well written but doesn’t seem to have much to say. The “twist” is not surprising or particularly interesting. I want to like this book but there just isn’t anything for me to work with.

A very surreal and spooky short novel. Playing on the anxiety and paranoia of small town life and from the perspective of an emotionally impaired and overly imaginative narrator. While the ending was a bit anticlimactic I still enjoyed the plot and course of events in this book. There were twists and turns that made me second guess or theorize where this book will go.
