This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. A couple of months ago I read a large collection of short fiction by Shirley Jackson, and enjoyed it a great deal. Going into this novel, I was excited by the creepy premise and hoped to get sucked into a Gothic horror story. However, I found this to be less engrossing than expected and a bit draggy in the middle. I think it may have been better served as a short story or novella. The ending and the beginning are both strong, but the middle was dull.

Shirley Jackson knows how to write an atmospheric book. Her stories aren't quite horror, but they are just thick with creepiness and a stifling feeling. It's a simple story, but the plot and mystery keep you guessing. (view spoiler) This is also a book I may need to read again to fully absorb what's really going on.
