The pet lion was *literally* the most interesting and engaging character in this book.
4.5 - the pace is slow but the prose and imagery is beautiful. I was a fan of Greek mythology as a teen and this brought back the memories! I thoroughly enjoyed the imaginative backstory of Circe! I actually liked this better than her first novel.
Among the easiest five-star ratings I’ve ever given a book. A delectable page-turner, you are coming for the soap opera squabbles amongst divinities and the heroes and the monsters and the vapid nymphs and the heart-warmth that comes from watching someone down-trodden as they locate their strengths. You are staying for the porcine transfigurations and the shit-talking.
I absolutely loved this book and was sad when it ended. Just as she did in The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller does another brilliant job reimagining a character from Greek mythology in a heart-wrenching and enthralling novelization with a feminist twist in Circe.
This might be the platonic ideal of a "totally get why everyone loves it, but super not for me" book.
