I really enjoyed this book! Typically I find stories based on classical history a bit difficult to access. They tend to be wordy and highfalutin, but Circe was extremely accessible and readable. I appreciated her inner struggle with herself and her identity as a very minor goddess. It was clear from the star that she felt more kinship to mortals than others from her divine family. Her journey to make peace with herself was compelling, despite the fact that most of her life she was exiled to an i ...more

A very charming take on Greek mythology. I really like how Circe is given so much more than her role in The Odyssey.

The section with Odysseus was a 5/5 but some of the other parts of the book just felt good, not great.

What I just read is absolutely brilliant literature. Miller is probably the most talented writer I have ever read. I am not a scholar of Greek mythology and Miller does not expect you to be. Nor does she intend to educate you. She tells a story, a most wonderful and beautiful story. Circe is an incredible heroine to read. She is strong and also very human. 4.5+.

This really worked for me. I loved how internal it was; spending time deep in the heads of smart, introspective, non-whiny people is one of my favorite things. Circe is a character who both wants and works to be good and to be true to herself. She makes mistakes and gets frustrated, but she never really considers trying for less, and I loved that about her.
