Every once in a while, I encounter a main character whose antics and misdeeds I find completely irresistible and whom I quickly come to adore beyond all reason, but whom I would never, ever desire to know in real life. Richard Sharpe, cold-blooded killing machine of the Napoleonic land wars comes to mind. So does Lymond. And so does Locke Lamora. This was a great read; I literally could not put it down. Interesting world-building, and given my interest in professional thieves and confidence men, how could I resist? I laughed and cried at this book, and can't wait for the next one (or two) in the series. ...more

DNF’d at page 370. It’s not you, it’s me. 100 pages in before the story began to resemble the synopsison the back. I kept on waiting for this to pan out and I still feel like the story is meandering all over the place. Other than a few elements, this could have been historical fiction and not fantasy at all. In fact, most of those elements are background and don’t have to do with the story at all. I guess this was just not for me.

This is a very swashbuckling adventure with tons of twists and turns mixed with an Ocean's 11 heist. There is of course a lot more to it than that, but I hate spoilers.

In basic terms, Locke Lamora is (with his small group of friends/co-thieves) a master thief and actor setting up elaborate cons to steal money from the richest people in town without getting caught. Needless to say things get complicated and the schemes get more and more insane as they struggle to stay one step ahead of the game.

Starts off kind of slow but picks up quickly and will not let you go. An excellent, exciting, fun read.
