So I'm the jerk who starts a book knowing it probably won't be her thing, but then rates it one star anyway to drag down the average. I was on board until the narration switched (basically permanently) to Kvothe's first person narration of his entire adolescence, in which he is basically the most obnoxious 15 year old ever.

Solid book... I just fail to understand where all the breathless 5 star ratings and adulation are coming from.
And yes, Kvothe is a better-than-best Mary Sue character.
I'm willing to buy some of the meta storytelling arguments I've read... Except none of them makes me feel more engaged with this story, nor any more likely to pick up the second. The upside: at least I'm not left on tenterhooks waiting for a third book that still hasn't come in what, 10 years or something? ...more

It was good. I dunno. A good book to read as someone still largely convinced that all narrative is fake and also and relattedly probably immoral. A credit to the genre. It didn't to me feel particularly groundbreaking, but probably that is because it is old. Women were definitely written a bit weird. How is anyone able to read and finish this?? The only way I managed was listening to the audiobook over a long drive. I don't understand the love for this book. I read a lot and mostly fantasy but this was so slow and long. I have no interest in reading or listening to the other two books.
