So I'm the jerk who starts a book knowing it probably won't be her thing, but then rates it one star anyway to drag down the average. I was on board until the narration switched (basically permanently) to Kvothe's first person narration of his entire adolescence, in which he is basically the most obnoxious 15 year old ever.

I'm of two minds about this book. On one hand, I think it has a lot of neat ideas and character moments. It is well written in a lot of ways and certainly has many gripping scenes that I read intently and I was quickly done a chapter and onto the next without realizing it.

Solid book... I just fail to understand where all the breathless 5 star ratings and adulation are coming from.
And yes, Kvothe is a better-than-best Mary Sue character.
I'm willing to buy some of the meta storytelling arguments I've read... Except none of them makes me feel more engaged with this story, nor any more likely to pick up the second. The upside: at least I'm not left on tenterhooks waiting for a third book that still hasn't come in what, 10 years or something? ...more
