What Members Thought

This was one of the most boring books I have read in a long while. There is some interesting stuff in the beginning and in the end, but the whole gigantic middle seems to be filled with nothing but variation of "blah-blah-blah". Things happen... but you don't notice it in the overflow of pointlessness. I have to be honest here, I do not see why this book is so celebrated. It is neither diverting nor original. I cannot recommend it to anyone.

I can't believe I put off reading this for so long because it's SO GOOD.
Bit of a sausage fest for most of the first book and doesn't pass the Bechdel test, but this is improved near the end and in the second book. ...more

People are crying about how this is borrowed mythology and the main character is overly heroic. All mythology is borrowed in some way or another, and yeah he's kind of overly heroic. But I don't really want to read the book about the guy who did a few things in a way that was mediocre at best and fair to middling on average, I want to read about the guy who is out being awesome.
That being said, some of the heroics in this story were a bit much. Some events seemed thrown in there just to enforce ...more

Loved the world building, especially the mystery of the Chandrian, and also the magic system. Story moves quite slowly, but I actually don't mind because I really enjoy the stories within stories, and the slice of life view of Kvothe's university days. Would have been five stars if it had passed the Bechdel test or been a bit less of a sausage fest, which the second book does better.

Kvothe is a bit too Gary Stu for my tastes (too perfect at EVERYTHING - surprised he didn't have purple eyes! - and cocky cocky cocky). And sigh, mysterious perfect dream girl "love interest". Interesting world-building, though, and I might eventually read the rest of the series. But not right now.
