What Members Thought

I wish I could give this 3.5 stars. The book does a great job at telling a story from modern Native American perspective. So few writers can express this segment's views and needs and wants and dreams accurately. It is one depressing story however. I got so overwhelmed by the scope of the problems in the book that I had to put it down for awhile. I also found myself with white guilt for what has been done and is being done to this group of people.

You'll find yourself in a deeply complex and beautifully realized world, connecting with everything about Joe. He is on the brink between childhood and adulthood, and the attack on his mother shoves him firmly in the adult direction. This was my first Erdrich book. I thought it was really beautifully written. I'm not always a huge fan of reading from the perspective of teenage boys, but Erdrich did a good job. I'm sorry I missed the actual book club discussion, because I was too tired.

I found myself thinking about 1/4 of the way into this book, "Why the hell haven't I ever read Louise Erdrich's novels before?" The story and the writing were excellent. I have a little bit of exposure to tribal organizations through my work, and so the references to BIA and laws applying to reservations were somewhat familiar. There are several mysteries wrapped into this book, but it probably worked best as a coming-of-age tale that explored the notion of morality in the face of evil. Erdrich'

In this book, Erdrich manages to successfully combine mystery, coming of age, religion, ethical dilemmas and Native American culture. Everything related to Geraldine's attack is incredibly engrossing, and the aftermath deepens in its complexity with each subsequent revelation. The fact that this crime stems from multiple real cases and existing faulty laws that make it difficult to prosecute rape cases on reservations makes it all the more horrifying. Joe provides an engaging, endearing point of

#booklyreadathon My rating had a lot to do with the fact that it took me awhile to get through it and that I felt that the chapters were a bit too long; wished that they had been chopped up into smaller chunks, as I lost a lot of the storyline in those long chapters. The writing was beautiful and it was an excellent story; just was unable to follow it well
