Effed up & awesome.

The premise of this book is insane: The town of Black Spring, located in upstate New York, is haunted by the 300-year-old ghost of a witch named Katherine, whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut, whose body is bound by chains, and who walks through the streets of the town and hovers by residents' beds at night. Welcome to the worst book I've read this year. It had been a good while since I've read a horror novel and when I bought this (based on an article about great modern horror novels on Book Riot) I was lookinging forward to something half decent. Sadly that was not to be.

I almost gave it up within the first 30 pages, such was the poverty of the writing and the resolute unbeliveableness of the characters, but I have a strong distaste for not following through on books I've started so I ploughed on. ...more
