This is another book I read for a book club. It was interesting to get some insight into Russia in the early 1900s. I liked how it was written, in a sort of fanciful and light style. I had trouble figuring out what the moral of the story was. It seemed like a satire against atheism, but it seems like it could just as easily be a satire against people who condemn atheism. Partway through I just decided to stop mulling over what the mystery theme was and just enjoyed the story.

Overstuffed book. Lots of hilarious interludes, some very absorbing narratives. Meanders to find its beginning and stutters to find its end. On the one hand it could lose a lot of its padding, but on the other hand it's quite delightful padding

I found Alpin's translation a slog. I prefer the Burgin/O'Connor translation.
