Interesting idea to make the underground railroad a real and functioning railroad in this novel that deals with the horrors of slavery and one woman's attempt to escape north. Really it's more than just about her, it's about all of the people who helped and hindered along the way. While it deals with an important topic, I just couldn't get engaged in Cora's story. Not sure why, but at times I was even a bit bored. I feel kind of bad for feeling that way, but it was hard to really become invested ...more

I feel like I've read a lot of books so far this year that I don't really have any strong thoughts on. This is another one of those. It's well written, but I don't think I was thoroughly engaged while reading through it.

I've had it on my to-read list for awhile and just picked it up because it's been turned into a TV show now and I heard something intriguing about the premise that I didn't realise before that sounded really neat, but ultimately I just thought this was okay. Oh well.

This is the most beautiful piece of literature I ever had the privilege of reading. Cora is a Survivor. It was a privilege to read her story. This book must be taught and read and talked about now.

Yet another book that in my opinion didn't quite live up to its hype. It has an interesting premise - what if the Underground Railroad were actually a railroad? But it doesn't do much with that premise. It was an interesting study in seeing the various states' responses to slavery (imagined or no), and had some very well-written passages, but...I'm just not getting why it received ALL the praise it did.
